The essay characterises the approximative 2 millions Roma living in the Carpathian-Pannonian region according to demographic, ethnical and political-geographical aspects. The main tendancies of development of these processes in the present and the future are outlined. The roma question is one of the largest homeland policy problem in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The main efforts are targeted at complete emancipation and improvement of the education levels and the employment situation among the Roma, while there are still voices on a local level that call for segregation and isolation.
