For a long time air transport in Germany had been relative static. Since around 1990 there has been a newfound dynamic for initial development, conversion and extension of airports, which can be summed up with the term newcommer airports. Usually upgraded and extended airfields became minor national or even international airports for scheduled and charter flights. The article describes the economical effects on the air transport sector, the consequences on the public subsidy system and common political and planning aims, and implications beyond well known ecological and social problems related to air transport.
