In the first section of the article, the history of scenarios and concepts of corridor development in the EU and in the Netherlands is discussed. It presents the definition of corridor as espoused by the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs (1997). In the second section an area-based approach is presented in which urban and infrastructure networks are integrated in a multi-scalar spatial planning approach. The final part draws attention to an integrated area development approach, in which the concept of urban networks and corridors are strongly linked. - (IFL)
