The system of competitions has a long and succesful tradition in Germany and renders considerable services to the preservation of building culture. In spite of many advantages in terms of form and content that are explained in the article, competitions must be continously defended against prejudice. The design of the periphery and urban redevelopment are considered to be important task areas in the next years. - (IFL)
