Military training areas proves themselves as large-scale events with a time limit caused by the development of weapon technology, whereas their effects concerning socio-culture and landscape are permanent. This is illustrated by the example of the northern German military training area Bergen-Hohne (Lüneburg Heath). The abandonment of this military training area will take place in the foreseeable future, so it is necessary to ask how the ecological, social, economical, legal and financial problems caused by this large-scale event can be solved and in what manner the deeply affected landscape can be made real use of. - (IFL)
