The article examines different social and economic patterns of cooperation and confrontation in urban settlements of the Karakorum Mountains in Northern Pakistan, which were manifested since the partition of British-India. The focus is put on the question, to what extent ethno-linguistic factors influence or even determine economic determination at initial stages of urban development is presented. - (IFL)
