Description :
The aim of this study was to assess the potential of Tanzanian stalagmites as palaeoclimatic archives. Twelve stalagmites were collected in cave systems in the coastal areas : the Nandembo Caves in the Kilwa Region, the Panga Caves on Songo-Songo Island and the Kiomoni Quarry Cave in the Tanga Region. Even though one specimen yielded useful results, the Tanzanian stalagmite material has not proved ideal for climate studies. The uranium content is generally very low, and most of the stalagmites are also too porous and/or too detritus contaminated to allow reliable U-series dating.
