The form and function of headwater streams based on field and modeling investigations in the southern Appalachian Mountains

Auteurs :

Description :
To further investigate the form and function of small headwater streams, the AA. have conducted a combined field and modeling study of channels from a variety of boundary conditions in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Channel morphologies and other characteristics were documented with field surveys, and rainfall-runoff modeling was used to simulate 2-year and bankfull discharge recurrence, erosive power and competence for specific channel hydraulic geometries. Results indicate considerable variability in channel characteristics and function that relate to local hillslope conditions, and suggest that some traditional concepts of fluvial function do not apply to headwater channels.
