Les terrasses de la vallée inférieure du Tibre

The alluvial deposits which fill the low Tiber River Valley show a morphology characterized by wide discontinuous terraces raising up till more than 200 m above the thalweg. Moreover the inner borders of all the terraces belonging to both the valley floors and the valley sides show elevation values which are recurrent and identical to elevation values of upper Pleistocene marine terraces scattered over all the world. From these results one may claim that terraces of the Tiber Valley, here discussed, represent traces of various steps of the withdrawal phase of the so called Tyrrhenian transgression of the sea, well represented in many places of the Mediterranean region.
