Description :
In this paper attempts were made to reconstruct the impact that demographic expansion of the Metropolitan Zone of Mexico City (MZMC) has had on the sedimentary processes of the surrounding environment, as recorded in the Espejo de los Lirios lake sedimentary column. Pb 210 and Cs 137 have been employed to estimate the historical changes in accretion rates in the lake and other parameters, such as magnetic susceptibility, the mineralogy of the clay fraction and total content of conservative metals (Al and Li) were used to trace the provenance of the sediments, evidencing that deforestation and consequently soil erosion in the catchment, is one of the direct consequences resulting from the urban growth of the MZMC during the last 60 years.
