Current shifts in abrupt climate change : the stability of the North Atlantic Conveyor and its influence on future climate

Auteurs :

Description :
This article shows that there are many instances of abrupt climate change in the past, especially during the last ice age, but there is much less evidence of even rapid climate change occurring during the last 10,000 years or so in the period known as the Holocene. There are also many unknowns about abrupt climate shifts in the future when the world will be much warmer than today. One favourite climate scenario suggests that cooling by a shut-down of the Gulf Stream at the end of the present century is more than likely to be balanced by global warming. In the final analysis, we cannot be certain about our future climate.
