As part of active conservation measures for the beaver in Poland, 11 animals were transferred to the Rawka Valley in the central part of the country in 1983. Over a period of nearly 20 years, the beavers spread over the entire valley and into those of adjacent rivers, as far as 60-70 km from the reintroduction site. The article shows the successive stages to the colonization process, and the effects of activity by the species such as the digging of burrows, building of lodges, local rising of the water level in the channel and valley floor, and vegetational changes. While a rise in the water level in the valley brought about an increase in the productivity of meadows, people complain about the damage being done to trees. - (BJ)
