The paper discussed the changes in polish rural development after 1989. Each of these has been described and assessed in regard to the influence exerted on the rural development that has taken place already, or is to do so in the future. Work has been done on the detailed and more general scales, the latter taking in a review of the literature and available statistical material, the former a study of 23 communes scattered across the country and considered representative of the functional types of rural area (i.e. areas with a prevalence of intensive, commercial agriculture ; areas with a prevalence of traditional, low-intensity agriculture ; forest area ; suburban areas of mixed functions and areas of importance to tourism and recreation. - (BJ)
