The stratigraphy and fire history of the Kutai peatlands, Kalimantan, Indonesia

Description :
This paper reports preliminary observations on the stratigraphy and fire history of the peat, supported by limited palynology and dating. Historical fires are associated with extreme El Niño yrs of drought, but human agency is important. The bulk of the peat in the Kutai lies below the regional water table and is not at risk, however, forest and peat regrowth will be impacted by repeated fires. The limited pollen data for recovery after past fire events suggest that post-fire forest regeneration will be relatively rapid if burning can be restricted.
