Intensive cooling through an open-work blocky layer : ground temperature monitoring in the Swiss Alps

Description :
This paper presents the results of two-year monitoring of ground temperatures on two kinds of alpine ground surfaces, a rock glacier and a soil slope in the Upper Engadin, Swiss Alps. The monitoring sites lie close to the regional lower limit of the mountain permafrost belt. Data from the two sites provide some parameters indicative of subsurface frost conditions, including the mean annual surface temperature (MAST) and the basal temperature of the winter snow cover (BTS). A comparison of these parameters permits understanding of the effect of the surface condition on the local permafrost distribution.
