Description :
The Vistula Valley, downstream of the gap section flowing through the uplands, has been studied on the basis of cartographie and historical data. Channel changes on the Holocene flood pain have been recognized during the last 250 years. These changes had a great influence on the settlement system and the road network, such as the decline of the medieval city Sieciechów, the development of Stężyca, an allocation of Stężyca, Wargocin and Swierze, and the disappearance of many small villages. Construction of the embankment limited river activity to a narrow inter-dike zone. - (BJ)
