Description :
This paper presents an integrated field and laboratory study of an area of typical silcrete occurrence in the UK, and enables parallels to be drawn with in situ silcretes in the neighbouring Paris Basin and other parts of northern Europe. The distribution, occurrence and macromorphology of the silcretes on the eastern South Downs are described, followed by a general account of their petrology, micromorphology and geochemical characteristics. Subsequently, the types of silcrete present in the region are identified and their diagenetic history, probable host sediments, timing of formation, and likely mode of origin discussed.
