Quantifying ecosystem geomorphology of the southern Appalachian Mountains

This study used slope gradient and 2 previously published geomorphic indices, terrain shape index and landform index that quantify landform shape and protection to develop a field-based landform quantification system at 4 study areas in southern Appalachians. An application of the landform quantification system is illustrated by predicting the distribution of eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) ecosystems in northwestern South Carolina. Discussion of the results.
