Hollow and habitable within : Symmes's theory of Earth's internal structure and polar geography

Auteur :
GRIFFIN, D.A.

Description :
In this essay, the A. tells Symmes's story by dissecting his Circular No.1 : Earth is hollow, and habitable within; containing a number of solid concentric spheres, one within the other, and that it is open at the poles 12 or 16 degrees; and placing it in the context of early 19th century American science. This provides a context for considering the influence that Symmes and his theory had on American science and culture.
