This paper aims at interpreting and classifying the criteria used in the evaluation of nature conservation and revealing their adaptability for the values of earth sciences. According to the authors some of the criteria (e. g. uniqueness, rarity, educational value) can be applied directly in earth sciences without any change, but some others (naturalness, diversity) should be adapted, and interpreted according to the values of earth sciences. - (JS)
