The aim of the article is to present local differentiation of rural areas in terms of the development of business units of physical persons registered in the REGON system in Poland in the year 2003. In the light of the analysis it can be stated that business of physical persons constitue an important part in the economic structure of the rural areas in Poland. In the year 2003 over 740 thousand business units were registered. They often are the only non-agricultural jobs available. Furthermore, the possibilities to use from the European Union seem to be encouraging. - (BJ)
