The author presents a social context of transformation, observed in the countryside and in agriculture since 1989, when the political system of Poland was radically changed. The basic function of the Zarszyn commune is agriculture, but before the 1990s transition, farmers obtained considerable income also due to their work in non-agricultural professions. The average farm size amounts here to 3.54 ha only. Actual problems of the countryside of this part of Poland are : population ageing, high unemployment rate and considerable fall of the economic efficiency of agricultural production. - (BJ)
