Non-agricultural activities carried out in rural areas are thought to be indispensable for their economic development. They are especially important to those farms that are situated in areas with unfavourable farming conditions. The article describes the criteria for the delineation of such areas, gives the number of farms operating in such conditions, and the area of agricultural land belonging to them. Non-agricultural activities in areas with unfavourable farming conditions are highly diversified spatially. To develop those activities, capital is necessary, a part of which will be possible to obtain from the EU structural funds. - (BJ)
