The article presents the role of rural structures created in the socialist period, in shaping contemporary trends of rural development. The analysis conducted refers to little Poland, a territory extremely diversified in terms of both natural, and socio-economic and cultural factors. Based on the data from the author's own research and from the last two popular censuses (1988 and 2002), main tendencies are presented in the area of social relationships, inhabitants' economic activity and their entrepreneurship, as well as in shaping of the new spatial and strutural systems of society and economy in different types of territories (suburban, peripheral, mountain, etc.). - (BJ)
