The paper presents changes that took place in the years 1995-2002 in terms of infrastructure equipment and economical potential in the rural areas of Poland. One of standardization methods is applied to identify the synthetic indicator of living conditions in the analyzed range. The analysis conducted showed significant spatial differences between suburban areas and the rest of the country. Research showed significant spatial differences between suburban areas and the rest of the country. Research showed a phenomenon of deepening polarization in Polish rural areas. The study offers a preliminary attempt to classify rural areas into territories : depressive, regressive, progressive and stabilized. - (BJ)
