The editor of this special issue argues that methodology is not just about techniques or methods but about epistemology and ontology. The essays in this issue grew out of two special sessions on methodology and power in the practice of historical geography at the 2000 annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers. The first five essays were developed from papers presented there by young scholars. The second set of five essays derive from panelists comments. - (SLD)
