Lake Sarez, Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan : mountain hazards and developpement assistance

Auteurs :
ALFORD, D.
CUNHA, S.F.
IVES, J.D.

Description :
In 1911, a massive earthquake-induced landslide created a natural dam of the Bartang River. Lake Sarez began to grow behind the natural dam and is now 60 km long. If the dam were to collapse, villages downstream, perhaps as far as the Aral Sea, would be devastated. Authors call for the enhancement of local emergency response system to respond to ongoing natural hazards. Although collapse of the dam is unlikely, they want Lake Sarez monitored and the villagers protected by an early warning system. - (SLD)
