Arctic-alpine environments and tourism : can sustainability be planned ? Lessons learned on Svalbard

Auteur :
KALTENBORN, B.P.

Description :
A rapid rise in tourism since the 1970s is threatening Svalbard's vulnerable arctic-alpine environment. A management plan for tourism and outdoor recreation has been prepared (1992-1995) to safeguard the environment ; it divides the archipelago into four distinct management areas. Author believes that there is a long way to go before the impacts of tourism on the environment there can be identified and described. - (SLD)
