Sprawl comes to the American heartland

A. begins be discussing the perceptions of urban sprawl and notes that it is also a problem for small cities (50,000 population and less). Then she reviews the definitions of sprawl, quantitative measures, and qualitative descriptors. She then uses three satellite images (1984, 1992, 2001) to assess the sprawl in the La Crosse, Wisconsin metro area. Whereas the image reveal a 205% increase in urban land over the study period, US Census Bureau data indicates a 18% population increase. She concludes by presenting and elaborating on the principles of smart growth. - (SLD)
