La croissance démographique et économique de la Lombardie
Auteur :LUCARNO, G.
Description :
Since Roman times, Lombardy's favourable geographic, climatic and environmental conditions have made it one of the most densely populated regions in Europe. Industrial activities, after the unification of Italy, created a pole of extraordinary attraction for people coming from all other Italian regions. In the 20th century, the poorest Alpine valleys and the most unattractive areas of the lower Po Valley gave rise to migration within the region and also to foreign countries such as Central and Western Europe and North and South America. On the other hand, the upper plains and the foothills of the Alps attracted many people. During the last decade of the century, after demographic transition had established a population of over 9 million inhabitants, Lombardy became the destination of a new wawe if immigration coming from the Third World countries. - (NF)
