Burmese people feel compelled to make accommodations with the regime in order to carry on with their daily life. A. also explores the strategies and techniques which the military has skilfully deployed in order to maintain itself in power in defiance of the popular will. After 1988 the internationalization of Burma's politics has been realized by both the military regime and the democratic opposition as they seek allies and support abroad. But the regime unwillingness to share power with a democratic government hampers the introduction of measures to resolve the country's political crises or lift the standard of living of the majority of the population. - (GL)
