Description :
Since 1950's the central plains of Thailand, traditionally dubbed as Thailand's rice bowl, with the implication of an agrarian society practising rice monoculture, have seen drastic changes which unlike the politically sensitive northeast, are little known. The book documents evolution in cropping patterns, new methods of cultivation, landholdings, labour availability and market opportunity. Water ceased to be a free good, became a managed resource which is increasingly scarce and hence subject to competition. Thai farmers adapted to a wide variety of changes and village society has become more integrated with the outside world. Following the growth of Bangkok Entrepreneurs, factories, and new informal businesses have come into the village while young people have left to the city. Government policy makers scramble to keep up with this pace of changes. - (GL)
