Description :
Bottom temperature of the winter snow cover (BTS) has been used as an indicator of the occurence of permafrost. In this paper, the validity of the manual BTS measurement is examined in comparison with the automated mean annual surface temperature (MAST) measurement. Rock glaciers are classified into active, inactive, and fossil types in terms of the activity status and the presence of permafrost. In this paper, the activity was tentatively evaluated by vegetation, on the basis of the empirical relations that the active type has no vegetation cover, the inactive type partial vegetation and the fossil type extensive vegetation.
