Aucune région autrichienne n'a autant bénéficié de l'intégration à l'Union Européenne que le Burgenland. Depuis 1995, cette région a reçu les fonds européens les plus importants dans les secteurs du tourisme et de la restructuration industrielle. La région du Burgenland a des frontières avec 3 des 10 candidats potentiels à l'Union Européenne 'Slovaquie, Hongrie, Slovénie). En 1998 a été fondée entre leBurgenland et la Hongrie l'eurorégion Euregio Pannonia.
