Description :
This study provides an insight into the extent and frequency of previous debris flows to permit a fuller assessment of slope stability in this hazard-prone location, the main A5 road in Nant Ffrancon. It uses 2 approaches to lichenometry to date earlier debris flows : dating estimates based on size/age correlations of Rhizocarpon geographicum prospectans growing in 2 local churchyards; population size frequency distributions with size increments dated using the churchyard growth rate. The results suggest that these slopes have a history of periodic debris flows covering at least the last 110 years.
