Sources of variation in regional economies

The paper employs a vector autoregressive methodology to examine the role of price shocks, defense shocks, national and local schocks in explaining fluctuations in non-farm employment in a sample of ten states in the US in the period 1969-2000. Oil shocks and defense shocks have more pronounced effects at the local level than they do at the national level.
