Origin of NE-trending basins in western Turkey

The stratigraphical and structural aspects of the basin fill in the E-W Grediz Graben and in the NE-trending Gördes, Demirci, Selendi and Upsak-Güre basins located immediately to the north of the graben are reassessed here. This paper gives a special emphasis on the discontinuity of the extension processes, which cannot be attributed only to the Early Miocene collapse of the Menderes Massif. It also aims to link the sedimentary infill of the basins with tectonic events. These are evidenced by normal and oblique-slip faults limiting the NE-basins, and also by open folds within these basins.
