This paper proposes a quantitative method for the calculation of the environmental impact on the quality of coastal and estuarine waters of the Basque Country (Spain). The calculation has been made by means of multivariant statistics, specifically using the analysis of principal components (PCA) it is based on previous methods developed for the Mediterranean coasts, (Niell et al., 1988). Data coming from a network of monitoring and quality control of coastal waters of the Basque Country have been used. The average environmental impact in coastal and estuarine waters of the Basque Country vary from 25 to 50% in general. Few locations like the Nervión, Deba and ()iartzun estuaries show levels above 50 per cent.
