In this work have been analyzed the sedimentology and micropalaeontological content (benthic foraminifers, ostracods) of two cores located at the right margin of the Urdaibai estuary (southern bay of Biscay). Four sedimentary episodes with a maximum age of 6 400 years have been recognized. During the first phase this area was under marine conditions, with a maximum marine influence at around 5 000 years BP, which is coincident with the pulsation described during the Atlantic-Subboreal transition. This episode ends with the transgressive pulsation described in previous works at 2 500 years BP. The second phase (1 960 BP) shows outer estuarine palaeoenvironments that were progressively filled, till the appearance of a vegetated marsh during the third episode. The core top bears fine sediment with very scarce microfauna indicative of the filling of this part of the estuary. This marsh, which is progressively isolated from the tidal influence, was anthropologically transformed from the XVIIIth Century onwards.
