Description :
The article addresses patterns of spatial inequality for the life chances of young people in an industrialised rural area in Flanders (Belgium). Two patterns of inequality are studied. The first is an inherited pattern of inequality between successful industrialised villages and deprived villages along the Flemish-Walloon border. The second reflects the traditional scattered Flemish settlement structure with locally developed rural poverty in the small villages and hamlets. Within the Flemish rural context the diffuse pattern has a more detrimental effect on the integration of poor young households than a relative concentration in deprived villages.
