What happens to rainfall at the desert margin ? Water infiltration experiments in a sandy arid area.

Description :
Infiltration rates are highest on the mobile dune crests. Sand dunes with bare, mobile crestal areas provide favorable soil moisture environments for perennial vegetation with deep root systems. Deep infiltration and subsurface flow following an exceptionally good rainy season are but a rare case at the desert margin. It may be concluded that the lower the infiltration rates on the dune crests, the lower will be the recharge of deeply infiltrated water in the main dune body. The percentage of biogenic crust cover at the surface is the only consistent boundary condition to be found controlling infiltration rates significantly in all environmental units. - (HPB)
