Problems and prospects of agricultural development in Cuba.

Description :
After the collapse of the former Soviet Union and the COMECON Cuba's economy declined considerably. The social successes for most people - they are outstanding if compared to other countries of Latin America and the Carribbean - were increasingly jeopardized. In 1993 and 1994 the Cuban government launched series of measures aiming at enhancing the productivity of all economic sectors. In agriculture, the third agricultural reform after those introduced in 1959 and 1963 transformed most stateowned farms into new decentralised and smaller cooperative units which already show a better performance. However, the Cuban government does not present a clear-cut liberalisation orientation which in turn leads to truncated reforms and sudden backdrops. - (MT)
