Stewart was an English professor at the U. of California-Berkeley who photographes and described U.S. Highway 40, the old National Highway, in the book U.S. 40, Cross Section of the United States of America (1953). This article is a revisitation of Stewart's original sites along Highway 40 through Missouri and Kansas. Author's photos date to 1992 and include urban and rural sites. Analysis includes comments from interviews with locals. - (SLD)
