Until the Chinese occupation in 1951 and the flight of the Dalai Lama in 1959, Lhasa was the political, economic, cultural and religious centre of Tibet. In the last 40 years, no other city in the world has been transformed in such a radical manner than Lhasa. The author describes the historic importance of the former holy city and its decline to a regional centre under chinese rule, the demographic and functional transformation processes and the demolition of the old Buddhist town. The destruction of Lhasa is to be considered as a real tragedy, not only for Tibetans and Buddhists, but also for the world's cultural heritage. - (HPB)
