The essay investigates the development of Russian regional geography and traces the transfer of its aims and concepts using the examples of Romania and the GDR. In the Soviet Union and in Eastern Europe, regional geographic research had its own purpose, different to the western countries. It have been linked to the task of developing and lending value to the sovereign state territory, regional geography had a state-stabilising concern. In difference to the western geographies, in Eastern Europe regional research included applied and practical aspects to a higher degree. - (HPB)
