Temporal classification of mass movements on the Wellenkalk-scarp in Thuringia and northern Hesse - possibilities and limitations

Mass movements in South, West and Central Germany

Description :
Because there are considerable variations in the recorded density of mass movements and because there are no records from earlier periods (prehistoric Holocene / Pleistocene), it is necessary to employ additional dating method such as dendrochronology, pollen analysis, radiocarbon dating and surface exposure dating (SED). Despite of the uncertainties the results indicate increasingly active mass movements afer the Subboreal period as well as during the Little Ice Age and a more frequent occurrence of mass movements during the last fifty years - possibly partly due to improved information in the short historical and modern time scales.
