Permafrost and ground temperature regimes : a challenging soil classification problem in low arctic and alpine environments

Auteurs :
THORN, C.E.
DARMODY, R.G.

Description :
This paper is an attempt to draw attention to the field problems raised by Soil Taxonomy classification requirements in alpine environments where permafrost is discontinuous or sporadic. It also provides 2 simple illustrations of spatial ground temperature variability drawn from the Abisko Mountains of northwestern Sweden and the Jotunheimen Mountains of central Norway where ridge crests are probably underlain by permafrost, but valley bottoms are not, and valley flanks may contain discontinuous or sporadic permafrost.
