Excessive mining and mining industry in GDR times resulted in a considerable lowering of the ground water table and contamination of the ground and flowing waters with the effect of undersupply of potable water for the inhabitants in the area. So finally feeding of external water via a system of long distance pipelines became necessary. After decline and discontinuance of mining and industries as results of transformation process, drinking water supply is again ensured. - (HPB)
