Description :
Surface coal mining in central Pennsylvania alters the physical and hydrological properties of soil erosion from its undisturbed state and changes the surface hydrologic response to precipitation. Newly reclaimed minesoils exhibit low, steady-state rates of infiltration and produce runoff dominated by infiltration excess overland flow. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of minesoil macropores on infiltration, throughflow, and return flow on a surface-mined watershed. A second objective is to examine the changes that occured in surface storm runoff hydrographs as rates of infiltration changed through time.
