Paleosols on Pleistocene dunes as indicators of paleo-monsoon events in the Sahara of East Niger

Recent and paleo-pedogenesis as tools for modelling past and future global change

Description :
This paper discusses the genesis and regional variation of the paleosols of the Ténéré and southern Tchigai Highland. Catenary studies highlight local variations in the soil pattern due to relief, influence of ancient groundwater tables, the extension of paleolakes and prehistoric settlement. Interpretations also consider the results of geomorphologic and archeological investigations at the same locations and of previous paleopedological and geomorphic investigations in the Grand Erg de Bilma, adjacent to the Ténéré, and in the Sahelian zone of East Niger.
